WILL IT ALWAYS BE LIKE THIS?
(GABI'S SONG)

words and music by Steve Schalchlin
as heard on THE BONUS ROUND SESSIONS
a benefit album for Youth Guardian Services

She found some words left in his notebook
The only clue he left behind
And from the words left in his notebook
She saw into his tortured mind

Fear was hanging in the air
He left a simple questionnaire

WILL IT ALWAYS BE LIKE THIS?
IS EVERYTHING SET IN STONE?
IS THERE NOTHING I CAN CHANGE?
WILL I ALWAYS BE ALONE?

WILL IT ALWAYS BE LIKE THIS?
IS EVERYTHING SET IN STONE?
IS THERE NOTHING I CAN FIX?
WILL IT ALWAYS BE LIKE THIS?

She took the notebook from his bedroom
Cuz he would never write again
She wondered could his words mean something
In lives of other kids like him

Her plans became crystal clear
His words ringing in her ear

WILL IT ALWAYS BE LIKE THIS?
IS EVERYTHING SET IN STONE?
IS THERE NOTHING I CAN CHANGE?
WILL I ALWAYS BE ALONE?

WILL IT ALWAYS BE LIKE THIS?
IS EVERYTHING SET IN STONE?
IS THERE NOTHING I CAN FIX?
WILL IT ALWAYS BE LIKE THIS?

So she went on the internet
And radio and Rikki Lake
And told the story of her young son Bill
Cuz she knew his life could stand for something still She said

IF WE LET IT STAY LIKE THIS
THEN WE HAVE HEARTS OF STONE
THERE’S SO MUCH WE CAN CHANGE
WE’RE NOT IN THIS FIGHT ALONE

IT’LL NEVER STAY LIKE THIS
WE WILL NEVER STOP THE FIGHT
Oh, oh, oh.
WILL IT ALWAYS BE LIKE THIS

WILL IT ALWAYS BE LIKE THIS
WILL IT ALWAYS BE LIKE THIS
WILL IT ALWAYS BE LIKE THIS

Bill Clayton's mother Gabi has a website at
http://members.tripod.com/~claytoly/
where she tells the story of the suicide of her son, Bill,
who was both a victim of a pedophile rape and then a gaybashing.
It was the following paragraph that inspired the title.

Gabi writes:
"He didn't leave a suicide note, but he had said to me before he was hospitalized after the rally that he was just tired of coping.
It was the constant knowledge that at any time he could be attacked again simply because of who he was... that despite the love of his family and friends all he could see ahead was a lifetime of facing a world filled with hate and violence, going from one assault to another.
He was 17 years old..."
